Every year millions of dollars are spent as people search for the best ways to lose weight. If you have been on a diet before, you know that you need to use up more calories than you consume every day. Weight gain occurs when the opposite behavior happens. Too many calories and too little exercise will make increase your weight.
The fact that people continue to ignore this basic physical law of weight loss is an amazement. We ignore the facts and continue pursuing the dream of a magical weight loss concoction which will “fix us” immediately. Our culture of getting everything immediately is not conducive to a plan of patience.
Low carb diets, low fat diets, fasting diets, cookie diets, and an amazing array of other diet “systems” and “plans” come on the scene constantly. People write new books about how to lose weight quickly and talk shows drone on incessantly about what the next great diet revolution will be. Diet and exercise still remains the keystone idea no matter what ribbons and bows are attached to the package.
As our society eats more and more “healthy” low fat food, we are becoming the fattest world in history. Some statistics describe us as the most obese population ever. The ironic part of this is the fact that we know more about how the human body works than we have at any other time in history.
A possible reason for the increase in obesity might be the sedentary lifestyles chosen by more people today. More and more, people can be found spending their working hours seated at a desk in front of a computer. This lack of exercise plays a role in the overall lack of fitness in our society today.
A complete change of lifestyle is needed if a lasting transformation is to be made. Spending your days wishing that you were eating something unhealthy will just result in yo-yo dieting and you will most likely end up gaining back any weight that was lost. If you have tried dieting before, you probably know that this method does not work. That is why you are trying to lose weight again.
Some ideas that might help include finding a variety of exercises that you enjoy. If recommended by your doctor, this might include joining up with other people in team sports, working out individually or some other outlet that you have never considered before. Whatever you choose, you should make sure that it is something you can continue to do and enjoy while you are doing it.
Another great help for anyone choosing to commit to long term weight control and good health is to finding or building some type of weight loss support structure. Having a friend with a similar interest in getting and staying healthy can make a huge difference for you if you happen to have a tough day. Talking to a friend about the challenges you face can make you feel better and it won’t put on a single ounce of weight. You can’t say that about the candy bar you might be tempted to eat instead!
